Atithi Devo Bhava – Sanskriti – Hinduism And Indian Culture

Atithi Devo Bhava : India is known for its incredibility, and the people of India can be easily recognized by the ways and style of living life. It is not only within the country, but they have left marks in other parts of the world. Either we traveled to other countries or the people of another country when they visited India; they recognized something which no other country has. With cultural and varied heritage, India is incredible, “Atithi Devo Bhava” being one of them.

“Atithi Devo Bhava is not just a quote you will see at any Indian travel and tourism organization, neither it is any mantra scripted in Sanskrit, which can define India. It is a culture or a common practice of the people of India, which is beyond any religion; anyone could see and enjoy when they visit India. It is one of the ways Indians show their incredibility and the practice for Atithi they offer are just beyond the words of this quote. Instead, it is a quality the whole nation, every individual of India is born with.

Aren’t these words true? Yes, they are probably correct but as the time is running fast, and the society is modern now, the value and meaning of the “Atithi Devo Bhava” is gradually disappearing. Why is that so? Why are the Atithi, the guest is being disrespected, fooled, robbed and facing other such awful behaviour? Why follow “Atithi Devo Bhava”?

Well, that’s because the people of Indian no longer remember their roots. In the race of modernization, the people of India have forgotten the difference between the right and the wrong. They do not remember the pledge where they say, “I am proud of it’s rich and varied heritage.”

In that case, you should be aware of some everyday things that represent Indian, also introduce your successors with them and teach them to continue the same. “Atithi Devo Bhava is one such culture of India, that people from different corners of the world, love to experience.

“Atithi Devo Bhava” is a Sanskrit phrase with the words meaning: Atithi- the guest, Devo-God, Bhava-is are or be. And furthered translating it to English it says, “Guests are God”. Keeping this in mind, anyone visiting India would be welcomed as GOD. Just the people of India join their hands and bow to the God, guest are welcome with a warm wish NAMASTE, further making their stay happy.

As we now have many travel and tourism organization taking care of most of the people who visit India, also they make sure the phrase turns up to be true. However, years ago, when there was no such organization, every single individual near to the visitors would ensure their experience in India memorable.

When you look into the books of Indian History, several facts and events successfully convey the phrase. Manykings who were either defeated and their land were captured or won over the invaders used to welcome the enemy as no less than a god, unaware of their evil plans. This clearly shows the existence of Atithi Devo Bhava is from ages. Apart from this, if you turn the holy, religious Hindu scripts, even there you will get the glimpse of Atithi Devo Bhava. Be it Mahabharata, Ramayana or any other stories where God and Goddess have played an excellent role in turning the phrase into a culture.

Hence, you get to know that the existence of Atithi Devo Bhava is there since India exist. And it should also continue till infinity to maintain India’s glory and fame. Most importantly, it should begin from you, and it is not only applicable to the people who come from other countries but also the people you live around, your friends, relatives, etc. You are a representative part of India, so next time whoever visits you make sure respect and give them an excellent hospitality.
